“Creativity through a Trauma Lens” with Julie Murphy, art psychotherapist.

A continual professional development day for artist, youth workers, community leaders, health workers and everyone interested in the arts.

Trauma is not in the event or situation but is held in our experience and body memory of that time. We encounter trauma in many settings, it may not be a dramatic event but may be subtle and continuous. Trauma Informed Practice has become a ‘buzzword’ in many organisations but what is helpful about it? In this workshop we will explore how we move from being trauma informed to being trauma responsive in our life and work situations. We will learn that the concept of post traumatic growth brings hope and that creative approaches are key in supporting the system to heal.

This interactive and creative day will allow participants to learn from the latest approaches to working with trauma through a presentation and discussion but with an emphasis on enjoyable experiential creative work which will be very much learning by doing. We will explore how to regulate the nervous system, why co-regulation is important and how we can support the people we work with to feel safe.

Julie Murphy, Short Biography;
Julie Murphy is an art psychotherapist with 30 years of experience and has recently trained in Somatic Experiencing and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. She has worked in prisons and psychiatric settings and currently works in Omagh with victims and survivors of the conflict in Northern Ireland and those impacted by historical institutional abuse. She has contributed a chapter on her work in Kosovo to the publication ‘Art therapy and Political Violence’ edit Kalmanowitz and Lloyd.
