Cruinniú na nÓg

Cruinniú na nÓg will be on 15 June across various locations

Cruinniú na nÓg, an initiative of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht as part of Creative Ireland is a national day of creativity for children and young people. Ireland is the only country in the world to have a dedicated day of free creative activities taking place in local communities across the country.

Cavan and Monaghan Local Authorities have worked with partners Cavan Monaghan Education Training Board through the Local Arts and Education Partnership Officer to bring this initiative into a number of national schools in the counties. Artists / Facilitators were engaged to provide process-based experiences in diverse arts disciplines.

The feedback from schools / artists and students has been excellent, a number of arts events for and by young people will take place throughout the county on June 15 2019.

Ceramic skills workshops with Artist Eimear Crowe in Mullahoran NS

The emphasis of the workshop is based on group activities and outcomes which allow a platform for students to work together, problem solve and consequently formulate their own individual response to art work. Providing a space where students can learn and engage with an artist enhances the child's knowledge of how artists work and the possibility of pursueing careers in the creative industries.

Because the workshops focus on experiencing the process of working with materials, it’s an investigative experience that can reach across curriculum and therefore influence how the student engages with learning and culture. Experiencing an artist practice through exploring the medium of ceramic and its materials provides an open-ended learning, nurturing a sense of enquiry which is essential to culture and its continued development because the students are experiencing a process rather than trying to achieve a specific outcome this develops visual awareness, literacy, confidence and develop skills that may already exist.

Diversity within the community - examine colours, imagery and symbols with Artists The Artful Badger (Olive M Mallon and Johann Stafford) in St Mary’s NS Crosserlough

The project commenced on Thursday April 4th, with 29 students in total from 3^rd and 4^th class. The project looks at the work of Harry Clarke, the well-known Irish stain glass artist. The aim is to make a collaborative installation of honeycomb (hexagon) polycarbonate pieces. Each student will have a hexagon polycarbonate on which they will depict their meaning of the word 'heritage' with in their family. Using the medium of glass paint. Our first class we talked about the work of Harry Clarke and took a trip to the local church to observe and sketch the stained glass and a conversation about what heritage means within the family and the . We also had a talk about the word Heritage with in families.

Musical approach to process in the classroom with musician Daragh Slacke in Butlersbridge NS

The project is best described as an exercise in songwriting and creative expression with children aged 10-12. The project starts with exercises in how to write a song with simple starting points and subject matter (ex. Nature, my feelings, songs in Irish.) Followed by the examining of popular songs, new and old, and what makes them good? Lyric Writing exercises in simple rhyming schemes. Melody writing exercises in simple melody writing and taking simple nursery rhymes/ pop songs and improvising with them. Finding a rhythm. How to create a rhythmic sound that will fill the song out. i.e. singing clapping or percussion instruments.

I, ME, MYSELF & a friend…art and literature with artist / poet Heather Brett in Ballyhaise NS

Weekly workshops from March to June with 4^th / 5^th class students. The students will analyse history and literature in a creative way that will inspire them to create their own unique artworks – a shining example of themselves at their artistic and literary best.

Youth Singing & Drama to explore the theme of FRIENDSHIP, ANTIBULLYING & POSITVE MENTAL HEALTH with musician Clara Raybould McCabe in Gowna NS

This project allowed students to engage in a very creative music and drama initiative, Students use music and drama as a tool for personal empowerment, development, reflection and exploration and it will also be help students explore and communicate very important and relevant themes to their peers, help with making new friends and contributing to positive mental well-being.

‘Look, Read, Write’ with artist / poet Bee Smith in Glangevlin NS

This project encouraged students to use first, second and third person points of view, to tell the same story in each of these ways. Bee would frame exercises using both a fact discovered (in a book or article) and then explore that fact’s story from three points of view. The workshop facilitation style is guided by an ethos of inclusion with the main goal of holding a safe space for participants to feel brave enough to try something new that will allow them to express themselves encouraging everyone to ask me to explain any words used if they don’t understand, And, then we check the classroom dictionary!

The Memory Project with artist Marilyn Pepper in St. Felim’s NS

For this project the artist worked with students from the Speech and Language unit from Junior infants to 2nd Class with 14 students in total at St. Felim's National School. Aged between 4-8 years old.

Students rediscover and uncover their memories of a particular place, life event, people close to them and log them in a memory book in an engaging and inspiring setting with age-appropriate techniques. The project involves making the memory book itself and this piece will form part of the final exhibition. The students can focus on building, growing and logging work within the memory book through self exploration and personalisation. Some works may form outside of the memory book but will be based around it. Deeper investigation is implemented through the techniques of drawing, photography, painting and collage.
