Culture Night Friday 16 September

Where will you be!

 

In Cavan!   A selection of events will be taking place in towns and villages across County Cavan for Culture Night 16 September.  

 

Music lovers can choose between Áine Cahill at Cavan County Musuem, The Henry Sisters at Ramor Theatre, Ronnie Murdoch and friends at Belturbet and Song Sisters at Bear Essential Bawnboy.   Lovers of traditional music can take in an early gig at The Commons in Belturbet with the Cavan Man, the Ed Reavy Weekend will provide a taste of what you can expect at their festival at Maudabawn, Mullahoran Comhaltas has some special guests promised at their event, members of Killeshandra Comhaltas will be at Lough Oughter Castle and Gráinne Conaty will perform at the Church of Ireland in Arva.    Cavan Sinfonia Orchestra will provide an early outdoor performance at the Market Square, Cavan town.

 

Followers of the visual arts are in for a very special treat this Culture Night with the opening in Cavan of 30 Years Artists Places.  The exhibition marks 30 years since Local Authorities embarked on providing for the arts locally, featuring 30 artists and 30 places.    The exhibition features many great Irish artists, included in this are:  Tony O’Malley, Alice Maher, Robert Ballagh, John Kindness, Norah McGuiness, Sean McSweeney, Sean Lynch and John Shinnors alongside emerging artists such as Jenny Brady and Julie Merriman. Cavan is represented in the exhibition by Jane Mc Cormack with her work SWIM and the accompanying poetry of Tom Conaty who responded to this work.   David Stephenson’s short film Raymond will be included for the Cavan show.   This large exhibition is available at Townhall Cavan and Johnston Central Library and continues until 14 October.   The poet Rita Kelly will be available to talk about this work as part of the education and outreach that accompanies the exhibition.  The exhibition is curated by Muireann Ní Chonaill.  St Kilian’s Heritage Centre Mullagh will feature Easter 1916 by Paul Galligan.   This exhibition part of the County Collection is touring the county in 2016 as part of the Centenary Commemorations.   Breffni Photography Club will exhibit their work at the Lakeside Manor Virginia and are on hand to give tips and talk about their passion.  Exhibitions from local children will be held at Bailieborough and Cootehill Libraries.   Dowra Courthouse hosts Jim Fee with a ceramic exhibition, workshop and musical accompaniment.  Open studio events are available with Michelle Boyle at Garryross Old School Studio, Konik artists and Johanna Nulty at Townhall, Cavan.

 

Outdoor projections are taking place in Cavan town with artist Marilyn Gaffney on the Market Square and Konik artists at Townhall Cavan, in the courtyard space.   A number of venues including the Backyard, Drumlane Community Centre, Virginia Show Centre, Townhall and Johnston Central Library host events where a number art forms and artists will showcase their work.   Cavan Genealogy will be part of the cultural facilities available at Johnston Central Library on Culture Night.

 

Cois Tine opportunity for musicians and spoken word artists will be launched on Culture Night.
