The Moogles Theatre Company’s offering for the One Act Drama Festivals this year was ‘Shooting Stars’ written and directed by Alice Lynch. The play examines two relationships as they are tested by pressures of modern societal expectations along with unmet expectations of each characters partner. The play was well received on the circuit, winning in Moate and Carrigallen and receiving second in Naas and third in Cavan along with Bernie O Reilly picking up two best actress awards and each of the rest of the cast being nominated for best performance in at least one festival. Overall, The Moogles qualified in joint fifth place for the All Ireland Finals in Letterkenny. However, the rules state that only five groups may compete in the confined section, so the names of both groups in fifth place were put in a hat and unfortunately, The Moogles lost out!
Nevertheless, the play still managed to win an award at the finals despite the cast not being able to perform in Letterkenny. A new competition began this year as part of the One Acts to encourage new writing. Each new play that was to appear on the circuit was adjudicated by a panel of judges before the circuit began and the award for best piece of New Writing went to Alice Lynch for ‘Shooting Stars.’
‘Shooting Stars’ will be performed in Mullagh on 17th February and in Milltown on 24th February.
