The All Ireland National Fleadh 2011 Anticipates ‘Cavan Obscura’

Artist Siobhan Harton has created a unique experience called ‘Cavan Obscura’, for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2011. Harton brings this exciting project to Cavan, from Thursday the 18th of August until Sunday the 21st of August 2011. Transformed into a camera obscura, a CIE double-decker bus will take you on an unforgettable adventure. For four days only, unsuspecting visitors on board the bus will embark on a magical mystery tour of Cavan. All aboard for this enchanting escapade!

Cavan Obscura will create a unique audio - visual experience, for both locals and visitors of Cavan. The artistic project is an ongoing project and has previously wowed Cavan locals when it exhibited in the Cavan bus station waiting room last April.

The 20 minute tour aboard the Cavan Obscura bus will present the passengers with a wonderful sensory experience of the surrounding area. This investigative artwork uses the principals of photography to project external images into the darkened bus. The result is a somewhat bizarre, topsy-turvy projection of the outside world, accompanied by complementary audio throughout the journey.

The Camera Obscura process is an age-old technique employed by famous Renaissance artists such as Leonardo de Vinci and Van Eyck to get photo-realism into their work, and later informed the development of the first cameras. In Siobhan’s artwork the double-decker bus will be transformed into a Camera Obscura. The bus will be completely blacked out with a pin-holes placed in the black out material facing the road front. Through the hole, an image of activity outside the bus is projected into the interior space in full colour.

Siobhan Harton expressed her anticipation of the tour: “It will be a truly magical experience when the individual views the outside world, upside down, in full motion! Visitors of the bus will experience the landscape as works of art; feeling inspired every leg of the journey”

Assisted by Cavan County Councils Arts Office and Peace III funding, Harton is part of a Border Arts Group that has been working with the Artists Sylvia Grace Borda on developing challenging new artwork based on the Camera Obscura concept.

Cavan Obscura goes on tour from Cavan Town Busaras from Thurs 18th - Sun 21st August at 11am, 12 noon, 2pm, 3pm
