Background

Mullaghboy Band was originally a flute band – started by Mullaghboy Orange Lodge in the 2nd part of the 1800’s and continued until 1956 when the lodge decided to form an accordion band with the late Bro. Stephen McAdam as band master.

The band has continued under the leadership of the McAdam & Mills families since with Jim Mills in the driving seat at present.

The first accordions were  bought in the late George Greer’s shop in Cootehill at a cost of £12 and £6. The latest accordions we bought were almost €3,000 each.

The band attends the local picnics and parades and in the nearby counties. In later years we’ve become involved in some cross-community projects that have brought us all over the country. We’ve been as far as Glenarm Castle in Co Antrim (as part of the Dalriada festival with Cavan Comhaltas). We’ve also been to events in Dundalk and Dublin.

The members of the band vary in age between 7 years and 87 years.

The band continues to survive and occasionally we are joined by guest players from other bands.

Our musical repertoire is mainly gospel and hymn tunes. We also play a selection of Scottish and Irish pieces.
