Mórtas an Chabháin

A series of temporary sculptural installations produced by eleven local artists in celebration of the Fleadh Cheoil An Chabháin 2010 are sited at various locations in Cavan town 10th July - 23rd Aug 2010.

See map below for locations of the sculptural work.

Anne O'Reilly, 'Triangles'
This site-specific sculptural installation in wood and steel consists of four large triangles in primary colours. Placed at various angles in relation to each other the triangles are inspired by ideas related to kinesthesia.

Alan James Burns, 'Dul ag Damhsa'
Inspired by Irish dance this audio visual installation in video is located beneath the stairs of Cavan Institute. Featuring the voice of renown lilter Seamus Fay, this dance-inspired artwork is a hidden gem to be discovered.

Edwin Lynch, 'Family Group'
These sculptural works meticulously crafted in wicker are located in the Con Smith Memorial Park. During the day they echo the shape of the Cathedral spire in the background, at night they come to life as luminous sculptures.

Joey Burns, 'Fiddle'
This larger than life fiddle head sits right in the middle of the mini roundabout in the heart of the town. Carved in wood this beautifully crafted fiddle head has steel strings that pin it in situ and instill a sense of music and fortitude amidst the frenetic activity around it.

Laura O'Connor, 'Dancing at the Crossroads'
This bandstand installation inspired by the tradition of 'dancing at the crossroads' provides an interactive platform for artists and audiences alike, a juncture where the people meet the opportunities to interact through their own self-styled performance. Both planned and random happenings to take place during the Fleadh!

Niamh Smyth, 'Lyrical Urban Landscape'
Located in the reception area of the Courthouse, this series of six works using ink on coloured perspex represent the artists career in politics and feature drawings of six of the oldest maps of Cavan town.

Ross Cochrane, 'Music of the Fleadh'
Located in the archway leading up to Arthur's Coctail Bar this lyrical visual artwork will bring an element of surprise to the Fleadh experience! [Going Live on the 16th Aug]

Sally O'Dowd, 'Shoefitti Cavan 2010'
This series of flags and Irish dancing shoes bring a carnival-type atmosphere to one of the main thoroughfares in the town. The flags contain buddhist prayers and the colours echo traditional buddhist clothing. The shoes are reminiscent of the act of hanging shoes on wires as a territoial symbol of under-the-radar activity.. in this case, Irish dancing!

Tina Quinn, 'Dance Dance'
This large-scale sculptural work of two dancing figures is constructed in papier mache but takes on the appearence of a permanent bronze work. It is beautifully located outside the townhall in a bed of flowers.
