Biography of Maria Kerin
Artist/curator/mentor: Trans-disciplinary artist Maria Kerin combines her process-based visual art practice with embodied movement through dance to create installations, performances and new media body works. Maria has refined this process into a unique methodology known as Embodied Creativity Process. Through this form of body-based work, Kerin explores points of meeting with site, artist and audience in an autobiographical enquiry. Often this response includes working with other artists through co-aligning. She also reaches audience through alternative site-specific locations, printed publications, the internet, mobile phones and live through skype. With artists friends from County Clare, Ireland, Maria has formed Outrider Artists exploring the model of friendship to form creative coalitions that include creating, curating, mentoring, international exchanges, hosting residencies and facilitating discursive gatherings at 4 O’Clock TEAS.
A graduate of Fine Art from DIT ’98 and a Bachelor of Business Studies from UL,’91, Maria also holds an MA in Contemporary Dance performance from UL ’06. Her work has been included in solo and group exhibitions and festivals in Ireland and at the Liverpool Biennial, AbunDANCE, Sweden, and SALT, Estonia. Awards include public commissions and bursaries from the Arts Council, Ireland and Clare County Council with cultural exchanges projects funded by European Presidency Cultural Partnerships 2013.
Maria Kerin has curated and mentored nationally and internationally and has been accepted to start a practiced based PhD on somatic practice and curating in UL this September 2015.
